Sandragraphs

I am in North Carolina at the Penland School of Crafts studying with Steve Miller of Red Hydra Press.

OMG. The Sandragraph.

So simple. So fun.

So you make a very low relief collage–a collagraph on three-quarter MDF board.

Making the initial layers

Then you cover that with matte medium and a thin layer of muslin.

Covering the board, including the sides with muslin

Follow that with more matte medium, adding texture with your brush or other tools. Make sure to keep a low relief!!

Matte Medium!

Plate all inked

This then goes into the press and gets printed like a regular plate or block, giving a similar mysterious quality as the pressure print. I’ll be printing text next, then a SCRATCHNEG. More on that later in the week. Another  great technique that allows me to exploit  making little dots.
