Adg is busy carving away linoleum!
In this week’s edition of “Experimental Letterpress,” we have ventured into the world of linocuts! A linocut is a printmaking technique (a variant of woodcut) in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife or linoleum cutter which produces a mirrored image onto a sheet of paper when printed.
For this week’s assignment, we were each given a number between 1 and 7, and had to come up with a design to accompany each that incorporated the number in some way. After much thought and deliberation, everyone ended up with some pretty awesome contributions! The linocuts will be printed using 3 colors: yellow, orange, and salmon, so there will be lots of cutting and carving to be done. Yesterday we printed the yellow layer, and I’m so anxious to see how the rest of it will come out!
